Plantar Fasciitis Embolization & Treatment

Plantar Fasciitis is the most common cause of chronic heel pain. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of the foot, becomes inflamed.

Plantar Fasciitis Embolization (PFE) is a safe and effective procedure that involves selectively blocking and reducing the increased blood flow to the inflamed plantar fascia. Interventional radiologists perform this minimally invasive procedure to reduce inflammation and pain associated with plantar fasciitis, particularly in cases that have not improved with conservative therapy (refractory plantar fasciitis).

Is PFE the Right Choice for You?

Have you been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis?

Have you experienced chronic (more than 6 months) intense heel pain?

Have you tried conservative treatments that did not work?

  • These treatments might include rest, physical therapy, stretching exercises, and orthotics (heel pads, splints, etc.).

Have you taken NSAIDs such as Motrin or Aleve to control your pain?

Have you undergone more invasive alternative treatments that did not work?

  • These treatments might include local steroid injections, plasma injections, radiofrequency electromagnetic field therapy, or extracorporeal shockwave therapy.

If you answered “yes” to most of these questions, you may be a candidate for PFE. Plantar fasciitis treatment options can provide relief for patients struggling with chronic pain. Book a consultation with one of our specialists to determine if PFE is the right step for you.

What to Expect with PFE

PFE is a new, minimally invasive alternative therapy for managing chronic heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis. It is highly effective and has an excellent safety profile.

How Does Embolization Work?

Embolization involves placing a small catheter selectively into the blood vessel using X-ray guidance and injecting microparticles into the vessel to reduce the increased blood flow and inflammation thus leading to effective pain control.

What Should I Expect on the Day of the Procedure?

This is an outpatient procedure that is typically performed under moderate sedation through a tiny pinhole in the groin. The procedure usually takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete. You can look forward to a same-day discharge with minimal pain and a quick recovery.

When Will I Feel Pain Relief?

Most patients report significant and long-lasting pain relief shortly after the procedure.

If you’re suffering from a heel spur or chronic plantar fasciitis, PFE may offer the solution you’ve been searching for. Under the guidance of a skilled plantar fasciitis doctor, you’ll enjoy minimal downtown and lasting results. Contact us.
